About the role
Herbal research scientists develop hypotheses about the medicinal properties of herbs, design experiments, and analyze data using statistical methods. They may also design and oversee clinical trials for human use, collaborating with medical professionals and adhering to regulatory guidelines. You will often collaborate with experts in related fields like pharmacology, biochemistry, and traditional medicine to understand herbal compounds and their mechanisms of action.
What you would do
- Formulate research hypotheses related to the therapeutic effects, safety, and mechanisms of action of specific herbal compounds or formulation
- Review existing literature to identify gaps in knowledge and areas requiring further investigation
- Design and plan experiments to test research hypotheses, ensuring the use of rigorous scientific methods
- Collaborate with other researchers, herbalists, and clinicians to incorporate diverse perspectives and methodologies
- Collect data through laboratory experiments, clinical trials, or other research methods
- Utilize statistical methods and data analysis tools to interpret research findings, identify patterns, and draw evidence-based conclusions
- Stay abreast of current research in herbal medicine and related fields
- Conduct literature reviews to inform the design and interpretation of research studies
- Design and oversee clinical trials involving human subjects to evaluate the safety and efficacy of herbal interventions
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals, ethical review boards, and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with ethical and legal standards
- Conduct laboratory experiments to explore the chemical composition, pharmacology, and bioactivity of herbal compounds
- Employ advanced techniques such as chromatography, spectrometry, and cell culture studies
- Prepare and publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Present research at national and international conferences, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge within the scientific community
- Collaborate with researchers from various disciplines, including pharmacology, biochemistry, and traditional medicine
- Foster interdisciplinary collaboration to gain a holistic understanding of herbal compounds and their effects
What We Expect
- Ph.D or equivalent advanced degree in pharmacognosy, herbal medicine, pharmacology, biochemistry
- Demonstrated experience in conducting independent research projects, preferably in herbal medicine or a related field
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques relevant to herbal medicine research, including chemical analysis and biological assays
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to critically evaluate data, identify trends, and draw valid conclusions
